Introduction

The Society, formed originally as the Genealogical Society of the East Midlands, exists to bring together all who are interested in family history research, to help in the preservation and indexing of local genealogical records, and in the copying and publishing of such records.

Although concerned mainly with Nottinghamshire families and records, we do have links with most other parts of the country through the Federation of Family History Societies of which we are a member society.

The Members' Evenings are held in the Ballroom of the Nottingham Mechanics in North Sherwood Street in Nottingham on the third WEDNESDAY of every month.

The Nottingham Mechanics is a new building, and the Ballroom is a light, well furnished, modern room with full audio and video facilities.

You will find the Nottingham Mechanics next door to the old YWCA building on the corner of Shakespeare Street and North Sherwood Street, The meetings will begin as usual at 7.30 pm. Refreshments, the Bookstall and Fiche will be available as usual.

A licensed café is available in the Nottingham Mechanics for those members who wish to use it. The café is open all day.

Please feel free to attend a meeting as a guest before deciding to join.

Members receive our quarterly journal, in which articles, interests, letters and queries are among the items included. Contributions to the Journal are submitted by members and the Journal is particularly useful to our distant and overseas members whose queries and correspondence are always welcome.

The society has published several indexes to various records in the N.F.H.S. Records Series. Surname indexes to the 1841-1891 censuses for Notts. are already available. Marriages for the whole county for the period 1813-1837 are published. Indexes for the Phillimore volumes are available on microfiche and the marriages not included in the Phillimore volumes have been indexed and published. There are also several volumes of Monumental Inscriptions which have been recorded by members. Details of all our publications available for purchase are published periodically in the Journal. Publications are on sale at meetings as well as being available by post & via the Internet.

Members who are U.K. tax-payers are earnestly requested to participate in the Gift Aid scheme. This will enable the Society to reclaim tax for each subscription paid in this way, and will thus be of great benefit.

Membership details are kept on computer for the purpose of producing journal address labels and for use in Member's Interests searches. Any objection to this should be made in writing to the Membership Secretary.
