Recordings

During the late spring, summer and early autumn a group of Society members records the inscriptions on the headstones in a Nottinghamshire cemetery.  In recent years the General Cemetery in Nottingham, the Church (Rock) Cemetery in Nottingham, Bingham Cemetery and Carlton Cemetery in Gedling have been recorded.

Mansfield Cemetery inscriptions will be recorded starting this year and probably taking 2 years to complete.

The tasks involved in this enterprise are:

  • Visit Mansfield cemetery and go to every grave and record the inscriptions on the headstone.
  • Transcribe the recordings into a computer spreadsheet.
  • Proof read the spreadsheet, comparing it with the hand written original, and visiting the grave again if necessary.
  • Photograph interesting or unusual stones, particularly those in a non-English alphabet.
  • Assembling all the proof read spreadsheets into a database ready for publication.
